Soft Serve and Pansy Leagues

The biggest difference between the NHL and the NBA today: The NHL rewards toughness. Lay a guy out with a good clean check and get celebrated by your coach and teammates back in the locker room. Spring right back up and continue skating AFTER getting laid out and you’ll earn your teammates’ and the other team’s respect for life. Same goes for the NFL.

mlb saves the president(ial inauguration)

Like most Americans, I had the full intention of watching the inauguration proceedings of our 44th President, Barack H Obama (nice move on the H, publicist) by way of the internets. However, in what I can only assume is one in a growing series of conspiracies against me, I couldn’t get any video players to work without brutal lag time. Everywhere.

What’s that? You’re so fascinated by this story you want some details? Well ok…

Overtime Ignorance

Two weeks ago, quarterback Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles admitted to not knowing one of the NFL’s overtime rules when his team’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals ended in a 13-13 tie. McNabb, a 10-year NFL veteran, said that he didn’t realize games could end in a tie until the final play of the game. “I never even knew that was in the rule book,” McNabb was quoted as saying. Since his admission, McNabb has faced massive amounts of criticism, with many calling for the former All-Pro QB to loose his starting job. But is the criticism really warranted? Who amongst us knows all the rules for our chosen profession? Below is a list of 5 industry specific rules we should all take note of, lest we have critics come calling for our starting job.

Chicago vs. LA: The ACC Championship

Posted by John Durbin | December 5, 2008

acc lavchi

In this installment of Chicago vs LA, Chris and John will argue the outcome of the ACC Championship that is to take place on Dec 6. Before you start penning your hate letters decrying this as not a “Chicago vs LA thing!” please note that Chris went to Virginia Tech and John went to Boston College, the two teams meeting for the title. This will be the second year in a row that the teams will meet to decide who goes to Orange Bowl with Virginia Tech winning last year’s game 30-16. BC has won the regular season match-ups the last two years and Vegas has the line as Even. So who will win this clash of Big East turned ACC rivals? You decide…

Major Websites Should be Mobile Friendly

Posted by John Durbin | November 25, 2008

mobilephone

Last night I was trying to track some NHL games via my mobile internet and went to NHL.com to get some scores. The amazing thing is, the NHL didn’t automatically send me to a mobile site. After a few minutes and a gradually rising eyebrow, it just dropped me off on a beat up version of their website. Maybe they have one that the iPhone doesn’t automatically send you to it but I stood looking at my phone with a face as though I had just gotten an e-mail saying “the entire royal family has been electrocuted and you are the rightful heir to the throne”, a la King Ralph. Side note for anyone who doesn’t think product placement works, I remember these things from King Ralph: The family being electrocuted during a picture, Ralph sneezing and his crown falling into the bathtub, Ralph bowling, and Burger King. As an added note, thinking about this is making me crave a Whopper.
