REFLECTEUR – Issue 67

Posted by Eric Bee | September 16, 2010

Denuology_Reflecteur67

This week’s issue of Reflecteur looks inward, seeing how digital culture can both connect and inspire us emotionally, while also making us feel more alone than ever. Between photostreams telling life-threatening illnesses to “f**k off” and using social media inspiring others to leave affirmations of beauty and self-worth in public places, the web connects and heals. However, as evidenced by the popular video, “How to Be Alone,” connected culture doesn’t always mean personal fulfillment.

Also, 1 million giraffes.

In this trail-laden, dysentary-free issue of Reflecteur, we look at how nostalgia fuels digital culture through the fan-made trailer for the classic 80’s edugame, Oregon Trail. Also, more silly parental behaviours laid bare for the entertainment of the web, quitting your job in (fake) style, and a stunning software model of what would happen if the world stopped spinning.

Denuo-U: Blumberg’s Draft Strategies

Posted by Chris Blumberg | September 9, 2010

DenuoU

A long time ago we started a tradition at Denuo. Once a week, someone would teach the rest of the group something. Anything. As you can imagine we’ve managed to cover a broad range of topics since it started.

Somewhere along the line someone thought, “Hey – we should share some of these presentations!” And since we have a website where we can do such things – we’re sharing them here with you.

So in honor of the first official game of NFL Football tonight – Denuo is proud to present its inaugural DenuoU.

Chris Blumberg schooling the group on potential Fantasy Football draft strategies.

Class is in session after the break. Enjoy.

As famed developer Warren Spector pointed out in his opening keynote at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), gamers have won the attention of the mainstream. Gamers were no longer a subsection of society that gathers late at night around a card table or glowing monitor. Instead, gaming is the largest entertainment pillar in the world and gamers, in various forms, are everywhere you look.

The folks that descended on Seattle were a motley crew, indeed made up of tabletop players, teams of pro Halo players, costumed fans of franchises from the Far East, and t-shirt clad console gamers looking to get their hands on the next big things in gaming. Funnily enough, though, despite the diversity, the most evident feeling from the show floor was the stunning sense of normalcy.
