So my sister and I have a running debate on what the proper pronunciation of certain foreign foods and words should be…do we pronounce them as they would in their home country?  Or do we say it with our natural American (and Californian, nonetheless) accents?  It started when she simply said “I made some homemade bruschetta!” but pronounced it “bru-sket-ta.”  I stared her in the face for a good 10 seconds until it finally occurred to me that she was pronouncing the dish the way Italians do; although authentic, it was foreign to my ears.  Who did she think she was?  Giada De Laurentiis?

Hey, remember when you only got your fashion fix through Vogue and watching MTV? (Okay, I didn’t have cable until I was like 15). But seriously, there wasn’t a lot to look up to back in the day – there’s no way I could afford any of those couture outfits in these glamour magazines, nor was there anyway I could pull them off…then or now. And the each magazine would have the latest fashion predictions for the following season, so basically I was dressing for fall when it was summer and for winter in the midst of the Santa Ana winds in October. But you know, I thought I was fashion-forward and I wanted to be on the cusp of the latest trends. I would breeze through a magazine within a day, load up on some more, and pretty soon I had entire walls stacked with old magazines. They were basically obsolete after I skimmed through the pictures and read through the articles, and rarely would I reopen them, lest to recall a specific brand or item. But thanks to the online world, I no longer have mounds of magazines against my wall, instead, it’s bookmark after bookmark of personal fashion blogs on my browser.

This year, celebs came-a-flockin’ supporting the historic election. From Oprah to George Clooney to Jon Voight, the famous (and even not-so-famous) rallied to get the vote out. Whether they supported John McCain or (now President-Elect) Barack Obama, the point was: get out there and vote. Vote for a cause, vote for your leader, and vote for yourself.

Recently, Carrie Underwood spoke out stating she lost all respect for celebrities who endorsed specific candidates as it implied that American public “wasn’t smart enough to make their own decisions.” A bit extreme, considering anyone who be slightly famous ought to sit back, for it could imply Americans weren’t smart enough to make decisions on their own.

At the same time…maybe there are certain “celebrities” that should sit this one out.
