10 components to viral videos

After seeing Parry Gripp’s latest viral hit, Spaghetti Cat, I realized that he’s gotten really good at two key elements of viral hits:  cute animals and catchy music.  So what are the others, you ask?  I’ll detail each of them with examples below.  While I’d love to see (or create) a video that contains all ten, most “hits” only feature a perfect execution of one of these components.
Note:  This list is for viral videos in general, not specific to branded efforts.

Yelp Sacrificing Integrity For Money?

Posted by Matt Gibbs | November 20, 2008

yelplogo

Eventually the Web 2.0 babies grow up and need to start making money. Yelp is no exception, as they recently hired an aggressive sales staff to bring in more ad revenue. Apparently, these salesmen are also making lofty promises that go against the whole point of a user-review site. They’re offering to move negative reviews to the bottom for businesses that advertise on the site. Shady!

Elf Yourself Returns

Riding the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” train, Office Max has brought back the annual holiday hit Elf Yourself. This year’s version is powered by JibJab and enables more sharing/embedding features than ever before. After the jump you can check out Jim Tressel, Dan, Anisha, Albert, and myself disco dancing as elves.

Now On Myspace: Custom TV Channels Featuring

Posted by Matt Gibbs | November 12, 2008

Internet Video + Primetime TV Shows + User Curation + MySpace = Primetime Application

Here’s the official blurb:
_____

MySpace’s new Primetime Application enables users to watch full-length and short form Hulu, Warner Bros, MySpace Original, and Licensed Content on their profiles and home pages.

_____

While videos on a MySpace page are nothing new, this takes it a step further by allowing people to stream their favorite shows via their own custom channel. So instead of visiting Eric’s MySpace page and seeing Battlestar Galactica and The Office listed as his favorite shows, I can watch his favorite episodes right there on his page. Enabling channel creation will also clean up clutter on people’s pages, since before the Primetime Application they’d have to embed a separate player for each video.

Click here to see the app on a page.

Will Disaster Girl soon reach MEME status? Probably not, but it’s a fun community involvement concept created by BuzzFeed.
